Headingley Carnegie on Fire with Young Cricketing Talent

Four teams from the four corners of Yorkshire came together on a very rainy 26 June to battle it out on the famous Headingley Carnegie cricket ground to become the winners of this years Drax Cup 2008. Out of the 270 schools that entered the inaugural competition, High View Learning Centre, in Wombwell near Barnsley, triumphed with Harehills Primary School, near Leeds, a close second. A bowl-off decided the third and fourth places for Stakesby Primary School, Whitby and North Duffield Community Primary School respectively.

Teachers, parents, friends and cricketing celebrities were on the pitch to watch the teams battle it out, and despite the rain the players managed to play all their matches on the world famous ground.

Presenting the trophies, medals and certificates was captain of the Yorkshire County Cricket team and Strictly Come Dancing winner, Darren Gough. Master of ceremonies for the presentation was Look North’s Harry Gration. Stewart Regan, chief executive of The Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Peter Emery, Drax Production Director, were also on hand to assist.

Drax Cup 2008 is the country’s largest cricketing competition for under 9s and is part of Drax’s Cricket in the Community scheme. It is supported by the Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with the Yorkshire Cricket Board and the Yorkshire School’s Cricketing Association.

Winners - High View Learning Centre, Wombwell near Barnsley

Runners up - Harehills Primary School, near Leeds

Third Place - Stakesby Primary School, Whitby

Fourth Place - North Duffield Primary School
