Cricketing glory for under 13s team
Amateur young cricketers achieve glory at The Lady Taverners cricket competition. The under 13 girl’s team from Holy Family Catholic High School, Carlton triumphed in the one day league, the highest level of competition for this age group, which was played at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium.
The team, many of whom were completely new to the game, worked tremendously hard during eight weeks of coaching to learn the necessary skills. From early October, Drax Cricket In The Community coaches, Paul Smith, Steve Foster, Luke Edwards and Chris McGlen taught the girls batting, bowling and fielding skills; they were also joined at the weekly sessions by England Ladies Test cricket stars Katherine Brunt and Sarah Taylor.
The winning team along with the school’s under 15s side, which narrowly missed out on victory, were commended by Drax coach Paul Smith.
Cricket coaching is part of Drax’s Cricket In The Community scheme which was launched May 2006 by Katherine Brunt. The scheme is designed to provide local schools with the opportunity to improve basic cricket skills and develop technique and is part of Drax’s support for education and the promotion of sports learning as part of the National Curriculum.
