Reaping the renewable benefit: Drax plans to transform itself into a predominantly biomass-fuelled generator.

Biomass electricity

We have been developing our capability to burn biomass since 2003 as part of our strategy to maintain our vital role as supplier of around 7% the UK’s electricity needs and safeguard secure, reliable and low carbon electricity supplies into the future.

Biomass materials include sustainable wood-based products, forestry residues and residual agricultural products, such as straw, sunflower seed husks and peanut husks, and energy crops, such as miscanthus.

Drax Power is fully committed to developing a biomass market and is convinced of the value of strategic partnerships that build prosperity for everyone and help promote environmental benefits.

As a low carbon, low cost and reliable form of renewable power, burning sustainable biomass at Drax Power Station will provide a valuable contribution to the use of renewables in electricity generation and make a significant contribution to the UK’s climate change targets.
