Government and regulatory affairs

Drax aims to keep Ministers, MPs, Peers, MEPs, officials and NGOs fully informed of the Company’s views and positions on current and forthcoming legislation and regulations, and on energy and environmental policy issues that may have implications for our business interests.

Energy Review

The Government’s Energy Review launched in January 2006 represented the single biggest opportunity, since the Energy White Paper of 2003, for those with an interest in the energy sector to influence UK energy policy. Drax engaged fully with Government, utilising all available channels, to ensure that our position was fully argued and understood.

The future for coal-fired generation

See our policy paper on the future for coal-fired generation. The paper states that a combination of methods such as co-firing with renewable biomass materials, a process championed by Drax, and deploying new technology could enable coal-fired power stations to rival the environmental performance of gas-fired plant.

Dorothy Thompson

Dorothy Thompson, Chief Executive of Drax, says... “As the country moves towards a low carbon economy the focus must be on reducing emissions of CO2. Coal-fired generation has an important part to play in this transition through deploying technologies, such as biomass co-firing, that are available today to improve environmental performance whilst delivering reliable and secure supplies of electricity.”
