Education in the community

Our “Cricket in the Community” initiative launched in May 2006 has the backing of the Yorkshire Cricket Board (YCB) and is endorsed by England ladies’ cricketer, Katherine Brunt. Four England Cricket Board (ECB) qualified coaches, all employees of Drax, take cricket coaching to primary schools in the local area as part of our support for education and to promote sports learning as part of the National Curriculum.

In 2007 we launched the Drax Cup competition, the region’s first-ever cricket competition for teams under the age of nine. Wheatlands Primary School from Redcar won the competition, having won the North Area Final to go through to the Semi-Finals and Final played at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on 6 July.

Harehills School from Leeds was Runner Up, while St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Pontefract and Mt. Pleasant CE Junior School from Market Weighton came in Third Place and Fourth Place respectively.

The knock-out competition was organised by The Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with Yorkshire Cricket Board and Yorkshire School’s Cricket Association.
